This journey to the forbidden city of Lhasa is one that few people will ever make. Tibet is wild and barren and not the most comfortable of destinations, yet your first sight of the great Potala Palace, the winter home of the Dalai Lama, or the sacred Mt. Kailash will be a breathtaking reward.
From Kathmandu you fly across the main Himalayan range and over the massive Tibetan Plateau to Lhasa. Your first day is spent relaxing to allow acclimatisation as your body attunes to the rarified air in this city which lies at 3683m. Two days are then spent visiting the Potala, the Norbulingka (summer palace) and the famed monasteries of Ganden and Drepung, plus that most revered of sacred Buddhist shrines, the Jokhang Temple. A walk around the Barkhor (the old market area of old Lhasa) is a shopper’s delight.
A couple of days is then spent visiting the old fortress town of Gyantse and on to Shigatse, home of the Panchen Lamas, before returning to Lhasa for the flight back to Kathmandu.
