We can arrange tours to the isolated Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan which lies to the east of Nepal and Sikkim, north of India and south of China (Tibet), and which until relatively recently was closed to western visitors. The number of visitors is still controlled with entry restricted to flights in to Paro by the national airline, Druk Air, from Bangkok, Calcutta, Delhi and Kathmandu, with one overland entry point from India. We recommend that you fly in from Kathmandu. All tours to Bhutan must be organised through a local agent and the costs are rather higher than for Nepal, as the Bhutanese authorities lay down a minimum per diem.
Bhutan, with a population of under 1 million, retains its unique cultural heritage and brand of Buddhism. The major centres are located in the valleys that dissect the country north to south which are protected and dominated by spectacular "Dzongs", magnificent fortified monasteries. A visit to Bhutan mainly involves drives over the high passes between these valleys, through pristine forests and lovely scenery; such as the "Tigers Den" monastery set on a cliff high above the Paro Valley. Invariable there will be the opportunity to observe ceremonies and festivals at the many monasteries.
During your visit you will stay in comfortable resorts set in attractive surroundings. The best time to visit Bhutan is in the Autumn (September to November) the Spring (March to May) which is the best time to see Bhutan's superb flora and fauna. It is possible to include a short trek of 3 to 5 days in your itinerary. Trekking in Bhutan is rather more basic than that which we offer in Nepal.
Accomodation in Bhutan is best described as rustic, apart from one or two extremely expensive and modern spa type resorts. However, wherever you are in Bhutan, the surrounding scenery is unforgettable. For those with limited time we can arrange a short 'Best of Bhutan Tour'.
