Trekking
"The training of our excellent Nepal staff, the kit and equipment we use, combined with a variety of off the beaten track routes, allows Ussher Tours to offer unique treks to people of all ages and varied physical fitness."

This was my philosophy when I started Ussher Tours in conjunction with Nepal Insight Trekking. With this in mind we have developed some outstanding treks, combining the beauty of unspoilt scenery, rich and diverse forests full of rhododendrons, wild orchids, magnolias, primulas and many other flowers. The bird life is exceptionally rich with over 800 species, a high proportion of which can be seen in the lowland national parks and wildlife reserves of Bardia, Chitwan, Koshi Tappu and Suklaphanta.

Food
ImageFood on our camping trek is a good mix of European, Chinese or Nepali which is hygienically prepared using fresh ingredients bought on the trail, or carried all the way from Kathmandu. At breakfast we serve porridge or meusli, followed by toast, pancakes or fresh naan bread with eggs. At lunch it can be tuna sandwiches, chips and coleslaw or hot tibetan bread with potato curry and sardines. For dinner depending on the altitude it could be a not so spicy Nepali curry with rice and local vegetables or a hot stew with naan bread, followed by an apple turnover. If you have special dietary requirements please let us know in advance.

Camps
ImageOur camps are always comfortable; we use roomy tents and provide portable hot water showers, seated loos, pillows, extra thick mattresses, quality sleeping bags with inner sheets, hot water bottles, folding chairs and good dining tables. Down jackets are provided for cold evenings.

We normally plan to arrive at our camp in good time so you can relax or go for a walkabout when you have a greater chance of seeing wildlife.

Fitness
Whilst our treks are walking holidays and therefore do require a reasonable level of fitness, at no stage do we go in for “route marching”. The climbs and descents are taken very gently with plenty of stops for time to enjoy the views, meet people on the trail and to look at the fascinating fauna and flora. We are normally on the trail for between 5 and 6 hours per day and will arrive at our overnight camp in good time. For the more energetic, we are always pleased to arrange an evening walkabout from the camp whilst others may wish to relax. We suggest that you do undertake some walking, to include a few ups and downs, in the 2 months prior to your holiday.

Photography
by Neil Eschenfelder, Utah - Dec 2008

Photography in Nepal offers perhaps the greatest diversity of subjects within a single border anywhere in the world. Nepal’s jungle lowlands offer birds, large cats, rivers that rock and rivers that roll. Views of Himalayan peaks, the world’s most spectacular, welcome you within only a day’s travel from nearly anywhere in the country. Whether you motor or trek, Nepal’s landscapes, flora and fauna stagger the imagination. Then, there is the culture. Long a crossroads, the ancient and the modern intersect in Kathmandu, home to Nepal’s largest population center. The myriad shops, temples and monasteries provide street shooting opportunities beyond compare.

Suggested Reading
On trek with us we will provide maps and have copies of “Flowers of the Himalayas published by Polunin and Stanton, and “Birds of Nepal” published by Flemming and Bangdel. These are difficult to obtain but there is also a “Concise Flowers of Nepal” by Polunin and Stanton which may be easier to find and is worth taking. Kathmandu does have excellent bookshops for obtaining maps and reading materials. Available in Nepal is “Birds of Himalayas” by Salim Ali, which is an alternative to “Birds of Nepal”. An excellent book to have at Chitwan is a copy of “Mammals of the Indian Subcontinent”.

Trip Grading
Gentle: All our Tours fall under this grade which involves very little walking and mostly traveling by car, bus, plane, boat and sometimes by elephant. There will be no camping unless you are rafting for more than a day.

A gentle trek is for those who are in good health and enjoy hill walking. These treks involve walking up and down hills through well-defined trails and with days that rarely exceed 4 to 5 hrs or more than 10 km a day. You do not climb higher than 3,000m.

Kit List
Bags for packing
  • A big duffel bag (preferably water proof) for you main things. This will come with you on the trek and will be carried by a porter or a pack animal. If you are not sure if the bag is waterproof, put your things in plastic bin liners. This is also a good way to stop the dirty stuff mixing with the clean. Scented sheets of paper used in dryers work very well for controlling odor from dirty clothing.

Responsible Tourism
Having worked with the Gurkhas for a long time we feel that it is our personal responsibility to leave as little impact in the areas we trek as possible. We aim to help the local economy and give the porters and our crew a fair salary and look after them.

On the trek it is the guide's and the leaders responsibility to make sure that the rubbish is disposed of properly. All non-biodegradables are carried back to Kathmandu and all cooking is done on Kerosene stoves. To help the local economy we buy vegetables, rice, kerosene, chicken and sheep from the villages enroute.

FAQs
Who is Ussher Tours Clientele?
At Ussher Tours we can cater to all age groups and interests but generally speaking the majority of our clients are in their 50s and 60s who are very interested in the flora and fauna of the Himalaya and they want to trek and explore in areas of the Himalaya which are undisturbed and unspoilt. Almost all of our business is now generated by referrals from our previous clients and repeat customers.

Apart from organising very successful tailor made treks and tours we have also organised high adventure treks and climbing expeditions for the British Forces, Oxford University (OTC), etc and logistics for documentary filming such as the Land of the Tiger (BBC), Himalaya (BBC) and Search for Shangrila (Charles Allen & Mark Shand) to name a few.
